Building a house from scratch in the middle of a field is a bit like building a prototype car. As with all prototypes, if you're building a car you usually have the luxury of producing several prototypes before you arrive at the production line version - so the opportunity for changing things is quite rich.

Neither traditional ERP applications nor project planning software is designed to meet these needs. Making low-volume prototypes and managing a complex array of suppliers, designers, and marketing initiatives requires software that can link all these activities together within a project planning framework.

Whether or not they bring one to market commercially is another story. Whether or not they will do so on their own is another open question. Hard to imagine carrier subsidies on a device unless there are revenues to be earned through downloaded services and content.

We've done more than just provide the software. We've built the reference designs to sort of get the category started. We had the first prototypes about nine months ago and started working with partners early on.

We've got prototypes in our labs right now and we're working with Gateway and AOL to bring them to the market. We have booked substantial production orders for those devices.

The Daytona Prototypes keep showing improvement every race. We have led the most laps all season and are a threat to win each race. We have one victory, but the team is hungry for more. Mid-Ohio is a driver's track and we have four good ones, so we are looking for good things next week.

This year has the potential to be best year yet for the ALMS. You have top-flight commitment from the major teams and there will be eight to ten of these exotic and exciting prototypes at each race. Audi and Porsche and Dyson Racing each have two brand new cars. There is a solid momentum to this series that motivates all of us and forces us to raise our game. It will produce great competition and an unequaled show for the fans. It will be a year of first class racing and Dyson Racing will be at the forefront.

The style is very simple, it has little to do with later Classical prototypes and rules.

In many ways, it's a business. You have to strike a balance between having academic freedom and doing different types of research, and having the work sponsored by companies that want to see research commercialized. At the media lab, we may have to go a step further than we've done in the past and build prototypes with sponsors.
