Talent has no gender. People are hiring young male directors right out of film school, off of a student film or off of a film at Sundance for millions of dollars. You can do the same with a female. It's not a risk about the work if you respect the film that they made.

'Diary of a Teenage Girl' was my first American movie. It was my first movie in an American accent. It's based on a graphic novel, which was written in 2002 by someone called Phoebe Gloeckner. It was turned into a play by Marielle Heller, who then wrote it as a screenplay for Sundance Labs.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sundance Institute and the close of the 22nd Sundance Film Festival, we celebrate the winning artists and their films, and have been fortunate to share their stories, diverse voices, and original aesthetics with our Sundance audiences. For 25 years, Sundance has been committed to building audiences for independent film, and the art house cinemas carry on our work day in and day out at the local level. In so many ways, these theaters are some of the unsung heroes of independent film, and we're excited to be collaborating with each of these 14 curators to bring new work and classics in independent film to their local audiences.

For instance, we still do not include any of the spending by Sundance Institute to put on the festival, which comes to about $7 million annually. Not all of that is spent in Utah, but a significant portion is. We also don't include air fares and what's spent by film industry companies on high-end entertainment at the festival.

I took all my TV experience and what I learned about - by writing and directing and bringing a movie to Sundance - about the realities of the independent film market: 'Transparent' is the marriage of those two situations.

You shouldn't think getting your film into Sundance means making a $10 million deal. Clear away, you've got to pick a market for it. Know what you've got on your hands and how to compete against all the other films out there.

What's exciting about Sundance is that they're making a name for themselves in this boutique television niche world, and there's energy behind that.
