I had called her up a couple of weeks before then, because I had heard this vicious rumour that she did not like the movie. It was very upsetting for me. I am very sensitive to that, because I am portraying her life and did not want her to be unhappy.

I had these fangs because I had jaundice when I was a kid and I was put on so many antibiotics that my teeth rotted. They had to cut them out. So I never had milk teeth. That was tough, you know, being in school having photos taken while I was pretending I had teeth. It was hideous.

You can never get to a place of comfort in this business. As soon as you hit that little cushy spot, somebody's gonna kick you out. So I have a constant need to do it better.

I grew up in South Africa and I would look at maps and we were at the bottom of the world. There was this whole thing up there. I was always reading encyclopedias about the world. So travel was something I was always attracted to.

I mean I tried to transform myself through characters throughout my career.

She's very private, but she was incredibly helpful to me,

we were concerned we were going to sound too broad, and maybe get laughs in the wrong way. We tried to fine-tune it a little, staying kind of neutral. Part of the transformation in any character is a new way of speaking. Also the physical look. Once again I worked with Toni G, who did my makeup for 'Monster.'

There are these moments when you can't back down.

I come from a ballet background; I did ballet for 12 years and I consider that my theater. I told stories with my body for 12 years and then came into this industry. I couldn't let go of that and it's still important to me. I really wanted to learn the skills of what Aeon had. I wanted to learn gymnastics; I didn't want to just be on wires and fake everything. I learned some skills I never thought I would learn.

The women were taking jobs in a community where there were no jobs to be taken.

Jeff wanted to do something that makes him feel good and is not just arty so nobody's going to see these films. They're showing these kinds of films are financially viable.

I think the most important thing that I got from them was when I got to be with their families and with their children,

I was told to go to a director's house at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, so I went, thinking maybe this is the kind of thing you do. He opened the door wearing pajamas. I walked in, and he offered me a drink. I instantly knew what his intentions were, and it was not an option for me. I feel grateful I have this personality, but a lot of women don't. That's why I can't sit back and say, 'Things are great for me, therefore they're great for everybody else.'

I was very scared going in, but also really excited about doing a film using my body again. I like that she never spoke. This character, she was very quiet, but she was telling her story through her body. It's a very physical role.

I think people have forgotten what actors do,

I think we all have a well we draw from, and there is a healthy way to approach it and a non-healthy way, ... I feel extremely healthy. I don't feel damaged. I'm not haunted. I come from a community where you just don't do that. There's no choice. You move on.

I was never just interested in playing that one note,

My character is fictional, but she is based on all the women who fought the sexual harassment case, and everything you see in the film actually happened.

We don't go through life with it all being smooth sailing. ... We all understand situations where you know it's swim or drown. It's a choice you have to make, and sometimes we surprise ourselves, when we actually make that choice and start swimming, with how well we can do it.

We didn't want them to watch the film and say, 'Oh, God, that's me. Now everybody knows that about me.' We wanted them to say, 'That reflects my life, but it's not me.'

When you're playing with aspects of sexuality, certain things have to be hidden. That's what my mother always used to tell me. I wanted to stay as true as possible to the original character, but didn't feel the need to go as far with the costume.

Whether its a real person or not, is irrelevant, ... The human condition is the same.

We've come a long way, and changing a law is really important. What I've realized is laws change, but you also have to change how people think. And that takes time.

Well, because I think that there is a comfort level that you have in a relationship that I think is sometimes hard for people to get around.

What I know in my heart is that women and girls on the ground are powerful and that they are leaders.

I can't live in a bubble and expect to come and work with Dior or go work on a movie and not have some kind of an evolution within myself and my own thought process and a passion about things or what's happening in the world. All of those things are the elements that make you who you are, and those are the things that sincerely come across in a photo or a commercial or in an interview. That's a constant thing for me.

I don't think you can create anything interesting from a comfort zone. You have to work from a place of fear and failure.
