So many of us were single and young, there were no boundaries between work and home. It was a tremendously productive period for all of us.

The role of research has always been to do the groundbreaking work and, as part of IBM, to transfer the work to products. I see my career as standing on a wall and seeing both ways. One way is seeing new possibilities and the other is building new products.

It was very, very challenging. There was never a doubt that it was important.
