One of the first things we did was establish that there was the shot-caller behind the scenes on the conspiracy side. We wanted to make it a woman, because we thought that would be an intriguing image. But, secondarily, we wanted to play against people's assumptions that the woman must be the president's wife or something and never really think that the woman could be the vice president.

Many will try. Most will fail, and a few will succeed.

I wouldn't be surprised if you saw something like 'Prison Break,' colon, and a few other words. But it's not going to be 'Prison Broke.

Basically it's going to be the second half of The Great Escape .

We're not going to tell you when they break out. There is a larger canvas here, and it's longer than a season. It stretches to two and three.

If the audience is invested in the characters, I think that season two will be quite a wild ride and in a very different look.

I thought it was a pretty good idea. It was just a matter of why would anybody do anything that stupid? And why would they believe they could do it?

I think people really liked that show in kind of a dark way or they had a very caustic reaction to it. This story is ultimately about hope. It's about the caper. It's about the mystery. This is not about the depravities of mankind.

In Season 2, the prison really starts to drop out of the story.

By season five the title will be about 30 or 40 words long.

It's the new trend. We were green-lit when 'Lost' came out. It had its big opening night. And I think probably all around town, a number of (serialized) shows were green-lit. And like everything else in this industry, I think that many will try, and most will fail, and a few will succeed.

We spend X amount of time within the actual walls and thereafter we're going to break quite a number of people out and scatter them into the winds and they're going to go to the four corners of the country in planes, trains and automobiles.

We certainly asked that question, and research bore out that, in fact, when you are going to incarcerated, you can make a request through your attorney to be incarcerated in a particular place that's close to your home, your family and friends. Now, the court doesn't have to honor that, but it certainly is a real process. If we didn't have that, then we might not have this show.

I've interfaced with a lot of other creators of serialized shows, and I've really been blown away by the fact that they create a big spectacle, at the beginning, in the pilot, and they don't ultimately know where they're going. That's terrifying to me, and creatively disingenuous.

Before I even put pen to paper, in any sense, I'm like, "What's the coolest MacGuffin you can come up with? What are the last frames of this series?" The secret that's behind this entire thing is to be as evocative, original, thought-provoking and timely.

I have a great amount of respect for the audience. They know narrative construct. They know all the tropes.
