This is an essential dose of protection for roughly 270,000 elderly and disabled people in Massachusetts who may experience a loss in drug coverage when they are switched overnight to the Medicare prescription drug program on January 1.
It's a huge increase and unfortunately it's not a surprise. It's all tied to the cost of health insurance. It's either employers dropping coverage, which we haven't seen much of, or employers raising the cost of coverage to workers, so they can no longer afford it.
The more realistic and genuinely financed plan is the one offered by the House. It's got real coverage and real financing.
