My children not only inspired me to reconsider what kind of eating animal I would be, but also shamed me into reconsideration.

Feeding my children is not like feeding myself: it matters more.

The justifications for eating animals and for not eating them are often identical: we are not them.

We've made science experiments of ourselves and our children.

Just about every children's book in my local bookstore has an animal for its hero. But then, only a few feet away in the cookbook section, just about every cookbook includes recipes for cooking animals. Is there a more illuminating illustration of our paradoxical relationship with the nonhuman world?

Every parent who loses a child finds a way to laugh again. The timbre begins to fade. The edge dulls. The hurt lessens. Every love is carved from loss. Mine was. Yours is. Your great-great- great-children's will be. But we learn to live with that love.

Choosing leaf or flesh, factory farm or family farm, does not in itself change the world, but teaching ourselves, our children, our local communities, and our nation to choose conscience over ease can.

She wanted nothing more than someone to miss, to touch, with whom to speak like a child, with whom to be a child.

It shouldn't be the consumer's responsibility to figure out what's cruel and what's kind, what's environmentally destructive and what's sustainable. Cruel and destructive food products should be illegal. We don't need the option of buying children's toys made with lead paint, or aerosols with chlorofluorocarbons, or medicines with unlabeled side effects. And we don't need the option of buying factory-farmed animals.

Isn't it strange how upset people get about a few dozen baseball players taking growth hormones, when we're doing what were doing to our food animals and feeding them to our children?

Parents are always more knowledgeable than their children, and children are always smarter than their parents.
