Let us, in short, do the work that is before us, so that when our time here is over, we will all watch the sun go down -- as we all must -- and say truly, we have prepared our children for the dawn.
I worry about all these grand ideas we promote here benefiting ordinary people. If they don't perceive that these grand ideas work in their lives, they won't develop a higher consciousness of the issues at stake.
We must work toward the day when citizen service is the common expectation and common experience of every American.
Could there be more? Of course there could be. Can we do a better job of defense? Yes, we can. Have we learned a lot from September 11? We have. So I'm basically very, very confident about the long-run future of this. I just think we've got a lot of diligent, difficult work to do.

I loved living in the White House. But I never thought I could do that for life. The thing I miss most -- is the work and the people that I worked with and saw. But I actually like this part of my life -- I like having my life back.
