The most fundamental paradox is that, if we're never to use force, we must be prepared to use it and to use it successfully. We Americans don't want war, and we don't start fights. We don't maintain a strong military force to conquer or coerce others. Well, the task I've set forth will long outlive our own generation. But together, we too have come through the worst. Let us now begin a major effort to secure the best- a crusade for freedom that will engage the faith and fortitude of the next generation. For the sake of peace and justice, let us move toward a world in which all people are at last free to determine their own destiny.

Our moral imperative is to work with all our powers for that day when the children of the world grow up without the fear of nuclear war.

To this day, America is still the abiding alternative to tyranny. This is our purpose in the world, nothing more and nothing less.

We can meet our destiny, and that destiny to build a land here that will be, for all mankind, a shining city on a hill.
